Chapter 15

The Guardian

The Guardian

The attic of Grandmother’s house was a labyrinth of forgotten memories, smelling of cedar, aged paper, and decades of dust. Holy, Molly, and Dolly had spent the entire rainy afternoon navigating through stacks of old trunks and moth-eaten curtains until they reached the deepest, darkest corner of the eaves. There, hidden behind a velvet partition, they found it.

Molly pulled back the heavy fabric, and the trio gasped. Standing amidst the shadows was a magnificent, mechanical being. It was a tall automaton with a dull, gilded metallic finish that caught the dim light of their flashlights. Its design was both intricate and imposing, featuring ornate, swirling scrollwork across its broad chest and a smooth, rounded head.

“Is it… looking at us?” Dolly whispered.

As if in response to their presence, the machine hummed to life. Two large, circular eyes began to glow with a warm, amber light, illuminating the dusty air around them. Despite its stature, the robot’s face—marked by a simple, straight line for a mouth and circular, headphone-like protrusions on the sides of its head—seemed more curious than threatening.

“It looks like a protector,” Holy remarked, reaching out to touch the cool, weathered brass of its arm. “Like it’s been waiting here for years to keep watch over everything Grandmother tucked away.”

“A guardian,” Molly agreed, her eyes wide with wonder. “Let’s call him The Guardian.”

The girls huddled together, the amber glow from the robot’s eyes reflecting in their own. They knew this wasn’t just a piece of old junk; it was a mystery waiting to be solved. How did Grandmother get it? Why was it hidden? And most importantly, what was it built to guard?

With a sense of newfound purpose, Holy stood tall. “This is the first official case for the Attic Investigations Club. Our mission: to uncover the true origin of The Guardian.”

The three sisters looked at the silent, glowing figure, whose golden eyes remained fixed on them, ready to begin their search for the truth.
